"Weekly Info", Summer Week 5/6: Welcome to the Summer

Posted by Tom Scott, 03/06/2009.

This is perfect weather for me. The sun is warm in the sky, but it's tempered by a cool breeze and occasional clouds. The pollen count's fairly low, and the sunburn risk only moderate.

And yet, here I am, still in the office.

OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS

Meetings have included: The Crime Reduction Group, working out what'll be happening in October's Welcome Week to make sure students and everyone else stays safe on campus. The Catering Consultative Group, where discussions involved the pricing of meals on campus and getting labelling for halal food. Student Services Consultative Sub-Committee, which includes everything from energy efficiency policies to making sure that Heslington East will be safe and secure.

I've also released the Returning Officer's Report for the big Spring Term elections - it includes some graphs which may or may not be of interest.

I've been talking to the union's 21+ Association, to the university's Alumni Office, and - a few days back - sat on University Court. It's been a busy few weeks, and it's not going to wind down for a while yet.

DUCK UPDATE

I'm in contact with a duck breeder, who'll have a pair of ruddy shelducks for the lake in the next couple of weeks. The release, though, will probably be a small affair, attended by a few campus press and dignitaries - much as I'd like to make it a grand show, I don't think terrifying the poor ducks with a pyrotechnics display and a hundred cheering people is the best idea in the world.

Here's the thing, though. The male duck's called Trevor - but we weren't given a name at UGM for the female one. Ideas to president@yusu.org, please.

DON'T FORGET TO VOTE

European Elections are tomorrow - there's a voting booth in Vanbrugh. Thanks to the way the vote's calculated in EU elections, one vote can make a difference here - so make sure you place yours!

That's it; I'm off to... well, sit in the office. Enjoying the sun won't happen for a bit, sadly.
