Disability Officer Report

Posted by Disability Officer, 21/05/2009.

Since being elected:

I have continued the disability support meetings, which Patrick informally established last term. They are social gatherings in the Courtyard on Mondays at 6.15pm in weeks 2, 4, 6, 8 & 10. It is a support group where students with disabilities can talk to others that face difficulties. I have plans for a publicity campaign to get more people involved.

I discovered that the e-Accessibility forum does not have a representative from the union, so I have become a member of the group and now represent students at the meetings. The forum makes sure that webpages and online resources that the university provides are accessible to those with disabilities, which is a legal requirement that the university needs to meet. If you have any concerns about any online resources, let me know (disability@yusu.org) and I will raise them at the next meeting.

I got involved with the dyslexia screening project and am assisting with the organisation of extra psychological testing arising from the screening.

I have represented students at the Disability Equality Scheme working group meeting, which produces an annual report on what the university has done to help students and staff with disabilities and sets future aims.

I have also attended YUSU committee meetings including EWD and campaigns committee meetings as well as assisting individual students with problems and questions.

Feel free to contact me at disability@yusu.org if you have any problems, comments, or suggestions.
