"Weekly Info", Summer Week 2/3: Roses and Recap

Posted by Tom Scott, 11/05/2009.

Two weeks roll together in this update, partly because I'm off on leave for the second half of this week - away to a conference.

I know it's been said a thousand times, and it'll probably be said a thousand more, but - congratulations to everyone involved with Roses. Every single athlete, every single steward and co-ordinator, every person who helped put the whole spectacular weekend together - you're amazing and you helped the York team reach what is, as far as I know, the biggest margin of victory the tournament's ever seen. I don't think it's ever been won on Day 2 either.

(If you want a bit of schadenfreude, search on Google for SCAN, Lancaster's student newspaper; it's story after story featuring the words "defeat" and "drubbing".)

Well done to everyone - and here's to doing the same in Lancaster next year.

WHAT I'VE BEEN UP TO LAST WEEK

I've been working on the Elections Review - which is running a bit behind schedule thanks to far too many other distractions cropping up!

I've sat on the Crime Reduction Group with the local police.

I emceed the Roses closing ceremony in which I said the words "goes to York" a lot while dressed something like a 60s variety act. (Black suit and gold tie may have been a poor choice, even if they are our colours. Still, better than the other way around.)

I've worked with Rory, the Societies and Communications Officer, to help sort out some of the new digital signage that'll be going up around campus.

And along with the rest of the team, I've met with Jane Grenville, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Students and talked about all sorts of issues.

Of course, I also dealt with the regular Stream of Emails that I mention every week, and our ongoing projects.

HESLINGTON EAST

I've also taken a site visit to Heslington East, along with representatives from the University and from Goodricke College. I'm pleased - and a little stunned - to report that not only is construction running to schedule, but it looks absolutely fantastic inside. I know I've rambled on before about just how big it is, but until you've stood in the middle of the quad, the buildings rising to five stories around you, you just can't take it in. It's going to change the face of this university, and I'm just a little disappointed that I'm not going to be around to see it finished.

AND FINALLY

In the very first one of these weekly updates, months ago, I said the trailer for 'Star Trek' looked fantastic, and I was so going to book a ticket for the first screening.

I did. At the midnight showing. In IMAX. And it was brilliant.
