"Weekly Info", Spring Week 6: This Time Last Year

Posted by Tom Scott, 17/02/2009.

Roughly a year ago, I was at a conference in Latvia when an email dropped into my inbox. It was from the Students' Union, asking me whether I wanted the campus press to know that I was running for President. I didn't know what was going on.

The rest, as they say, is history. A fairly small part of history, but history nonetheless.

And so it begins again: the annual cycle of elections has kicked off. This time I'm the returning officer, and it's going to be interesting being on the other side of the fence - approving publicity and handling any issues... if there are any.

There are a couple of days when I'm away from campus during this election season, but I'll still be in touch as returning officer: the curse of the BlackBerry means that I'm never going to be too far away. The staff in the front office of the Union - Carol, Fiona, Jeanette and Val - will be doing their usual fantastic job giving out election packs, printing publicity, and handling the administration; and Saul Bertoletti, the Union's CEO, will be acting as Pro-Returning Officer with help from Kat Docherty, our NUS Regional Organiser.

For candidates, it's going to be a rollercoaster ride; for students, it'll be a whirlwind of posters and people campaigning at them; and for me, it's probably going to be a nightmare. But hopefully, for everyone, it's going to be fun.

Strap yourself in. Elections are go.
