"Weekly Info", Spring Week 2: The Courtyard is Open
And so the dust has settled, the countdown clocks around campus show 00:00:00, our guest of honour has returned home, and the Courtyard is officially open.
But it's not over.
The Courtyard isn't just about one day. 45 years of campaigning and waiting, and months of hard work, aren't all for the big launch event. Every day, people will be going in for breakfast, for coffee, for lunch, for dinner, or for a night out. Not just this term, not just this year, but for generations of students to come.
Food service will start during this week - the only place on campus with a full menu and table service, and open later than any other outlet - and there are events planned every night. I said it in my speech at the Grand Opening: we really are starting a new chapter for the Union and for the university, and it's going to be fantastic.
So go along, grab a drink and a biscuit - and in a few days' time, grab a bagel for breakfast, or Sunday lunch, or tapas with friends. Or go to Quids Inn on Friday night, or the comedy nights, or to any one of the other things that are going on.
I can't even bring myself to end this on a cynical, sarcastic note like I normally do. It's brilliant.
MOUSE CLEANING
Congratulations to the York Sport Committee on their greatest "steal Rory Shanks's wireless mouse, hide it around the YUSU office and leave a cryptic clue written on the back of one of his business cards" scheme yet. It was over half an hour before the mouse was found in the old tankard on my shelf, which meant that I could go up to Rory's desk - with him still unaware of where it was - and ask if he'd like a nice big mug of mouse. To me, that was more entertaining that watching him try to retrieve the mouse from a skylight with an eight-foot pole.
ONLINE ONLY
I've taken this 'Weekly Info' blog, originally started as a paper version of Daily Info, online only, thus saving a few hundred sheets of paper every week and also my printing budget.
AND FINALLY, WHERE'S THE PIRATE?
Someone emailed me today asking this, and, well, no, the Captain hasn't been making many appearances lately. The shtick gets old very, very fast, and the trouble is that it makes me the focus of whatever the event is, rather than whatever the focus is actually supposed to be. A lot of the time, I should stay in the background and make sure things are happening.
But plans are in motion, and you could well see a tricorn hat around campus again soon.
