Welcomed Changes to HMO Policy

Posted by Tim Ngwena, 14/09/2010.

Last week, Grant Shapps, Minister for Housing announced a reversal of the anti-student legislation that was introduced by the previous Government in April 2010. This means that as of  the 1st October 2010, there will be no automatic requirement for planning permission to let a property out to three or more unrelated people.

For York this is great news, having just come out of a meeting last week where York City Council's Local Development Framework Working Group  ( LDFWG ) tabled a proposal to look at using HMO Policy to control the localisation of students in specific areas of York. YUSU alongside other student representatives in York will campaign against such directives and ensure that councillors inside and outside of our wards, keep the interests of their student citizens at heart.
