Getting the ball rolling
I've been in the role of Student Activities Officer for the best part of a month now, so just thought I'd let people have a run down of the kinds of things I've been doing.
TRAINING
Lots and lots of training. On day one we met all the North East sabbs for some networking, we’ve been trained by the University on areas from Dealing with Interpersonal Conflict, Delegation through to Disability Awareness (which involved Laura Borisovaite’s somewhat dangerously navigating my blindfolded self around Heslington Hall).
We’ve had two days of NUS training, coming up with personal and team goals for the year, as well as a weekend at Tall Trees with some team goal setting and a particularly hideous performance at bowling…
I’ve also been on an NUS Training day on Liberation, with a slight detour through a cornfield (don’t ask…) failing to prevent a thoroughly useful learning experience.
ON THE JOB
Amongst this training overload, I’ve been getting down to business as Student Activities Officer.
I’ve completed the society ratification process, and setted to work on Freshers Fair along with staff members. I’ve also started work on an activities handbook, answered queries and begun looking into a review of our Ultra Vires regulations alongside our staff and the RAG Officers.
That’s not all – I’ve not forgotten < my policies I was elected on.
We have one college with a RAG Raid planned and two more in the pipeline, we’re working on making sure students can sign up for societies online, we’re working towards making sure we have the funds to run a full Kids Camp next Easter and have opened correspondence with regards to reintroducing SWAP. Talks are ongoing with Careers with regards to larger Careers events, and there are plans in the pipeline for skills training sessions.
I've got to work on policies of the other candidates. I’ve put the finishing touches on Rachel Hesslwood’s policies of A Student Activities Column in the York Press, so keep your eyes peeled for that, and get ready to get down to Physics for our second Society Stalls Area.
There’s a long, long way to go though – there are spaces to get open, pledges to fulfil, people to convince and unseen obstacles to overcome.
I’m excited though, and if you’ve got any problems, queries, requests or questions – get in touch and lets get some results this year!
