Hello from your new LGBT officers
Next week sees the launch of YDAHO, based on IDAHO, but this is, more specifically, York university’s day against homophobia and transphobia. We’re really excited about this, as we’re going to put up some great posters together for the day, with typical examples of homophobic and transphobic insults, coupled with captions exposing the inaccuracies, bigotry that drive these insults.
Given that it’s our first term as officers, and it’s the summer term, we thought we should spend as much of it as possible planning for the big events we’ve got planned for the new academic year when it starts in October. For this reason we’ve decided to set up a sub-committee in the coming weeks to help us plan the best events possible for fresher students coming to the university. That’s not to say we’re not planning anything for this term!
Week 7 of this term will be marriage week, a week in which we examine the connection between marriage and LGBT in the UK and beyond. We’ll be having panel discussions with representation for religious faiths, and an event in which we partner with the women’s committee to discuss what marriage as an institution actually means, and where LGBT challenged and changes this tradition.
We’ve also got a speaker coming in week 9 to talk about his activist work in Uganda, which should be very inspiring for anyone who attends.
It’s out full intention to continue the great work of last year’s LGBT officers. That’s why we’re scheduling drop-in sessions to begin as early as next week (more information on that in the weekly email), and intend to put out promotional material that publicises the existence of our college reps and gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans and queer reps.
Please feel free to send us an email for anything from campaign suggestions to any problems you might have at lgbt@yusu.org
We’re looking forward to a great couple of terms, working with as many of you as possible.
