What happens next: A message from your Careers Service
Thanks to all of you who contributed feedback during We Are Golden Employability Campaign last term. Your ideas and suggestions have helped to inform the University’s Employability Strategy, which is currently being developed and which will influence the University’s future plans around careers and employability. There were also lots of ideas about how we can ensure the work of the Careers Service meets more of your needs, and here are the things that we can update you on straight away:
Careers Service Website
- You would like the website to be more user-friendly. We are working on this but we need to know how! If you would like to help shape the future of the Careers Service website, and are free on 26 May from 1-3pm please email iz2@york.ac.uk, and you can participate in a website focus group. All participants will be given £10 for their time, and free biscuits.
Finding Summer and Part Time Work
- You told us that you want more information about part-time work. Make sure you get to the Vacation Work event from 2-5pm on 25 May (Tuesday, week 5), PT005 to find out about some paid and voluntary opportunities for summer, tips for finding work, CV reviews and immigration advice.
Large Scale Events
- You told us that you want more large scale events. We have just had a very successful ‘Careers in Heritage’ event attended by 150 students, and are planning lots of big events for next academic year. Don’t forget to check the careers website, www.york.ac.uk/careers, or sign up to our Facebook page to find out what’s on each week.
Careers Service Opening Times
- You told us that you would like the Careers Service to be open later in the evening. During Autumn Term 2010 we plan to pilot later opening (until 6pm) on one evening each week, so those of you in labs all day can still come and see us. Look out for details nearer the time. Meanwhile, don’t forget that our website is accessible whenever you want it - you can find lots of useful information, vacancies and events listings there.
Careers Service around Campus
- You want us to be more visible around campus. With the support of YUSU, we hope to get into Vanbrugh Stalls and Colleges next year, and we’re working on building better links into departments, so you won’t be able to miss us. Remember though, we can give you advice and information, and provide a range of opportunities, but you have to make it happen!
We were pleased to hear that those of you who had been to events and careers appointments, or used the Careers Service library, found us to be helpful and friendly. We are! Our big message to you is that we are here for you from day one of your time at University. Take a look at our website, come and see us, and most of all, make the most of the fantastic opportunities being a York student offers you!
