Environment and Ethics Officer: What I've been up to recently
Recycling has been the big focus of the start of this term. The University is negotiating a new waste management contract, which gives us an excellent opportunity to lobby for improved recycling facilities for students. As part of this we've been conducting a review of recycling on campus to try and get a picture of how students feel about the current system; what changes need to be made and what could be improved. Thanks to the 150 people who have responded to our survey; there's been some really useful feedback. If you haven't already done so, you can contribute to the discussion here
There are two motions from the Environment and Ethics committee at the Union General Meeting tonight. One proposes amendments to the committee, adding a directly elected 'Events Coordinator', 'Campaigns Coordinator' and Secretary position. This is intended to make the committee function more effectively and to expand the scope of YUSU Environment and Ethics. If the motion passes, those positions will be elected during the Autumn Term. If you're interested in standing and would like to have a chat about the role, feel free to email me at environment@yusu.org.
I've also put forward a motion which calls for YUSU to sign up to the Global Learning Charter. This is an initiative lead by the Development Education Agency which states that all organisations across all sectors should be involved in a process of learning to better understand the globalised and interdependent world we live in. If the motion is successful, YUSU will be the fist student union in the country to sign up, which I'm really excited about.
The next Environment and Ethics committee meeting will be on Wednesday 26th April at 4pm in V/120. All are welcome!
Finally, if you have any queries, comments or would like to get involved, please contact me at environment@yusu.org
