Volunteering Funtimes!

Posted by Rachel Hesselwood, 04/03/2010.

As always, the last few weeks have been busy for YUSU Volunteering:Student Action in the Community.

On Tuesday we held the first ever summer opportunities volunteering fair. Around 12 external groups exhibited, and students could find information on how to get involved with volunteering on campus, in the City of York, in the UK and internationally. The fair was a definite success – and hopefully will become an annual aspect of YUSU Volunteering.

We’ve also held a mega college challenge, where we finished the work we did in the Campus Nursery earlier in the year. Most colleges were represented and we got lots of brambles cleared. Langwith are currently winning in the volunteering league, but it’s very closely contested so there’s everything to play for with the coming college challenges.

I wrote a blog earlier today on the college challenges, all of which are happening either on Saturday (Derwent, Goodricke, Vanbrugh and Halifax) or throughout week 10. You can email your college reps for more information.

Other things that have happened this term include applications and interviews for the Easter Kids Camp. This will be non residential, and volunteers have now been selected. More information will come out about summer Kids Camp towards the beginning of next term – the venue is all booked for a full residential camp, so watch out for information!

We’ve started work with York Carnival, providing volunteers for their workshops, and hopefully getting our projects involved, which is a really exciting new development.

The cast is now recruited for the summer play, Macbeth. Rumour has it that the YUSU Officers will be making a guest appearance as the tree army. Rehearsals are underway, and I’m informed they’re going really well.

We’ve got our final mega college challenge of the term on Saturday week 9. We’ll be doing some conservation work at York Cemetery – from 10am – 4pm. Watch out for the facebook event page coming soon.

I’ve also been getting ready for the handover of the committee. Our elections will be at the start of next term, so if you’re interested in running for a position then watch this space! We’ll be holding a big meeting with all the committee and project coordinators on Monday, 5,15pm V044 so if you’re interested why not come along to find out more!

So, I guess that’s it for my last ever officer report! I’d like to say a HUGE thank you to my amazing committee,Rhianna, and the fabulous project coordinators for making the year so great.
