Equality in the workplace - What Women's Committee have been up to!

Posted by Womens Officers, 04/03/2010.

This term we have been focusing on equal pay. Our first event was a myth busting forum to address all the myths and controversies associated with this issue. We invited four excellent speakers who addressed the issue from different perspectives. This was followed by an enlightening question and answer session which everyone enjoyed hugely.

The next event we are on along this theme is our Equality in the Workplace Careers Event, which we are holding in conjunction with the Careers Service. The event is on 11th March at 5.15 to 7.15 in ATB/056 and Cafe Barrista.

The first hour will be focussed on employers and what they can do to create a more inclusive workplace. We will have speakers from both the private and public sector and there will be plenty of opportunities for question and answers.

The second hour will give students a change to network with the employers present as well as organisations which support equality in the workplce. There will also be lots of informative literature for students to take away will them. Refreshment will be provided.

It should be a very informative and excellent event for anyone who is worried about facing discrimination when they enter the workplace.

Another exciting event which took place this week was the Human Library organised with LGBT Committee. This gave students the opoprtunity to sit down with people who may often be defined by a stereotype and reveal the person behind the label. We are hoping to run it again so that more students can have the opportunity to confront their own stereotypes.
