University of York signs up to 10:10!

Posted by Environment and Ethics Officers, 16/02/2010.

After months of student campaigning, the University of York has pledged to reduce its carbon emissions by 10% during 2010 as part of the 10:10 campaign.

Since YUSU made the commitment up last year, hundreds of students have been involved in lobbying the university to sign up. Alongside more conventional methods such as meetings and written correspondence with University officials, our efforts have lead us to lie on a wet and cold Vanbrugh Paradise in the shape of "10:10" and sit in the Courtyard wearing ten jumpers.

The campaign brought together members of the Environment and Ethics committee, People and Planet and many students with no previous involvement in environmental groups. It was great to see students from all backgrounds come together behind this great project.

There's an important message here: campaigning works and we have the power to change things. Getting the University to sign up seemed like a very long shot back in November, but with mass support and a strong case, we all made this happen. Climate change might seem like an impossible challenge, but we are not powerless to act.
