"Weekly Info", Autumn Week 5: Viking Raid Thanks
This is going out as "Weekly Info", a new and more personal companion to YUSU's Daily Info. It's subtitled "The Captain's Log". It looks a bit better on paper, because I can do sidebars and fancy formatting, but it's important to get it online too.
Hello. I'm Tom. I'm the President of the Students' Union. If you're a first year, you'll know me as the guy dressed up like a pirate who ran down the stairs of Central Hall when you had your induction talk. If you're not a first year, then I'm... well, I'm that pirate guy.
I've been meaning to start writing these for five weeks now, and other work constantly gets in the way — which is infuriating, since talking to students and letting everyone know what's going on is one of the most important parts of my job. One of many, many parts.
The sidebar of this first update sums up what I've been up to so far: in the next few weeks, I'll run through what the other officers have been doing. It's quite a surprising amount of stuff.
VIKING RAID: THANK YOU
Thank you to so many people for making last Thursday's Viking Raid such a success. Thank you to the stewards, who collected more than £500 for RAG over the course of the night and made sure everyone got around the bars safely. Thank you to the bars, who handled a thousand students in bright matching t-shirts descending on them amazingly well. But most of all, thank you to everyone who attended – because I didn't receive a single complaint on our "Silent Students, Happy Homes" disturbance hotline the next morning. Not one. That's brilliant. Thank you.
Oh, and to the two nursing students who asked me about a mature students' group: in case you didn't remember what I yelled over the din of the music, it's called the 21+ Association. You can get in touch at www.yusu.org/21plus, 21plus@yusu.org, or via their Facebook group.
IN OTHER NEWS: THE NEW STAR TREK MOVIE TRAILER IS OUT
I am so getting a ticket to the first screening.
AND FINALLY: A VIKING RAID APOLOGY
Sorry, girl-whose-toe-I-accidentally-stomped-on-while-walking-round-Tru. By the time I realised that I was being cursed at, I'd moved a bit too far away to apologise without it being incredibly awkward.
THE SIDEBAR:
BIG THINGS I'VE DONE SO FAR THIS YEAR:
Student Centre on the university's project tracker for Heslington East: check.

THINGS THAT I'VE STILL GOT TO DO:
Swashbuckling lessons for YUSU officers: this Christmas.

Society budgets in gold doubloons: probably not, but they're definitely going to know when the budget allocation is this time.

Doing the best damn job I can: damn right.
