This term, a lot of our work has gone into planning last week's Week of Pride, exploring the relevance of Pride today and showing the strength of the LGBT community by sharing individuals' experiences. It was really successful, and we received loads of positive feedback from the debate and talk that underpinned the whole week. We released a booklet of short stories and articles to go along with the week, and we've got a few copies left over, so let us know (lgbt@yusu.org) if you'd like to get your hands on one.
We've also been getting as many new people involved as possible and welcoming our new committee all of whom were vital in making Week of Pride possible and have already started work towards making LGBT History Month next term a success.
As a longer term goal, we've been trying to keep dialogue with the University open on a few LGBT issues and how they're treated in departments, and although progress is slow, we seem to be getting somewhere.
Next week, Harri Weeks from NUS LGBT will be coming to explain what trans is and why trans provision is important. He'll be speaking at 18.30 in L/N/002 on Monday 7th. He's really good at making a sometimes complicated topic really accessible and by using his own personal experiences is really capable of drawing people in. It promises to be a great talk, so we'd love as many people to make it as possible. It's open to everyone, and trans is often a difficult topic, so it would be great if we had a good non-LGBT crowd come along to hear all about the kinds of things we're trying to work on.
