Ahoy, me hearties!

I'm heading off into the wild blue yonder - well, the wild grey down south - today, taking the two weeks' leave that all YUSU officers take sometime during the summer, to help run the London Pirate Festival. It's not exactly a holiday - more a temporary change of job - but I'm feeling a bit guilty about it to be honest. The office is so busy right now: Matt, who's the Services and Finance Officer, and Rory, the Societies and Communications Officer, are working their fingers to the bone trying to put everything together for the first week of term. Not only that, but they're handling the other Big Projects like the Union Bar, and I feel like I should be there with them.

I can't commend my team enough - they're putting in hours of work above and beyond the call of duty in order to get their jobs done. I'm sure the rest they'll blog eventually to let you know what they've been up to, but it's just finding the time - I'm only doing this because I'm currently sat on a train and the wireless internet is too slow to actually make most things usable.

I'll tell you this: it was very difficult to keep the secret that we'd booked Dave Benson Phillips for Freshers' Ball. I'd mentioned that we had a "legend", and that just resulted in people giving me a lot of suggestions and waiting for me to confirm or deny them. The oddest guess I received was Daley Thompson, and oddly several people thought we'd booked Noel Edmonds. Two people guessed correctly, and they win points. What do points mean? That's right: absolutely nothing.

It's been a very busy few weeks, and it's not going to get any easier for a while yet. But, well, that's what we're here for.

My train's pulling into Kings Cross now, so I'll have to draw this entry to a close now. There's lots I want to talk about, but it will have to wait for another time.

We're really looking forward to October, and we hope you are too. See you then!
