Five weeks in
Ahoy, me hearties!
First of all, the big news for those of you who remember the elections this year, and the campaign for "Mad Cap'n Tom": I'm wearing a suit in the office. I know, it would have been fun to have the three-cornered hat and the duck on my shoulder, but professionalism had to win out.
What have I been up to so far? Well, I've been climbing up the steepest learning curve I've ever experienced - but I think I'm steadily reaching the summit. (Wow, that's a terrible metaphor.) We've started planning Welcome Week, and all the events that go with it; I've sat in meetings with the univeristy's higher-ups for many hours and pushed students' views forward; and I've delivered Supervisor of the Year awards to some rather chuffed members of staff.
Along with the rest of team, I've also been helping (or, at times, hindering) Matt Burton to decide the acts for Freshers' Ball and, well, put it this way: I'm probably one of the most cynical people when it comes to the calibre of the acts that play the student circuit, and yet even I'm fairly impressed by who we've booked this year.
I hope you're having a great summer - along with everyone else at YUSU, we'll see you in October!
Cheers,
Tom
