Roses
Way back in 1964, when Sir Charles Carter, the then Vice-Chancellor of Lancaster University, challenged his York counterpart, Lord James of Rusholme to a boat race, little did they realise that Roses would blossom into the sporting institution it has become.
The first weekend of May 2008, York University campus will be deserted, as athletes and spectators alike will cross the Pennines as the White Rose of Yorkshire will strive to defend the Carter-James trophy that was won so emphatically in York in May 2007.
The three-day event, the biggest sporting event of its kind in Europe, will take place between 2nd-4th May, as over three thousand competitors will do battle in 45 different sports. After forty-three years of competition, the scores are still all square at 21 wins apiece (and one draw!), so there is a lot at stake.
The chainmail and broadswords may have been replaced by hockey sticks and rugby balls, but make no mistake; it's still war.
