Opportunities

Sport at York isn't just about being on the sports field, and the Athletic Union prides itself on the wide range of alternative activities. We organise social events and charity fundraisers as well as the opporunity to qualify as referees and coaches and to volunteer in the community.

Referees
Nationwide across all sports there is a shortage of referees. In recent years the art of officiating sporting competitions has become more widely recognised as the skilled and demanding discipline that it is. The AU seeks to help to qualify those who think they have what it takes, no matter what their chosen sport, and to helo them practice their trade once qualified. All the referees in college sport are students, and many of the clubs use qualified student referees for BUSa matches when other officials cannot be found. Many of our referees are involved in officiating local leagues and all officials are paid for their time.

Coach Education Scheme
The Athletic Union subsidises the cost of qualifying as a coach for any of its members, providing they agree to use their qualification to help either their club or the Sports Volunteer Programme. We have qualified dozens of coaches so far in a wide range of sports. As well as supporting the attainment of basic qualifications that allow volunteers to coach in schools, our support extends to subsidising a coaching qualification of any level, right up to national standards. The coach education scheme is an important service that the AU offers and should be considered by anyone with a passion for sport.

Sports Volunteer Programme
The SVP is an initiative established by the Athletic Union seven years ago, which helps provide sports coaching in the community, in local schools and clubs. In previous years, thanks to the generosity of the University's Active York fund and other financial supporters, the AU have been able to send qualified cricket, hockey, tennis and rugby coaches into local schools. This has proved to be a hugely rewarding scheme both for the schools and the volunteers and this year we hope to widen the range of sports in the program and get more students involved. If you are interested in volunteering in sport (you don't have to be a qualified coach), please contact auvolunteer@yusu.org.

We also run termly first aid courses through the Red Cross. Please email auordinary@yusu.org if you are interested.
