Clubs
The lifeblood of the AU is its clubs. We have an ever expanding array of clubs, with the number currently set at 54. Each club consists of members who between them elect a club committee to run the club and represent the clubs interests to the rest of the Athletic Union. The decision of which clubs to join can seem daunting, and YUSU:Sport realises the importance of being able to speak to those currently involved when making any choices. That’s why on the Saturday of freshers week we hold the YUSU Fair. At this event every club will be present on a stall ready to answer any questions you may have, and give you a feel for what the clubs do. It is the best chance all year to join any clubs, so make sure you’re there!
Let us know how this year's YUSU Fair went for your sports club. Was holding it on the same day as the AU Mart good or bad? How did things go for your club? Let us know here.
BUSA
Many of our clubs compete in BUSA competitions. The British Universities Sports Association is the UK governing body for University sport. Last year we finished 39th out of 149. This may not seem immediately impressive, but is in fact an amazing achievement – for example, we came above institutions larger in size such as Liverpool, Lancaster and UCL. As well as being wholly competitive as an athletic union, we also have individual teams that compete at the highest levels of national sport, as well as a range of individual players who are selected for international teams.
Roses
Each year York competes in the Roses competition against Lancaster. This festival of sport takes place over three days – 4th, 5th, and 6th May where, in the shadow of history, the White Rose of York battles with the Red Rose of Lancaster. The swords and chain mail may have been replaced by hockey sticks and rugby balls, but make no mistake, it's still war.
The hosting university alternates each year. This year’s competition will be held in Lancaster and we will travel across the Pennines in May and fight to bring the Carter-James trophy back to Yorkshire. There are over 100 events across the three days, in 45 disciplines, making Roses the largest competition of its kind in the UK. With over 3,000 people involved make sure you’re there to experience it.
Varsity
2005 saw the first Varsity competition between ourselves and our local rivals, York St. John. Although Varsity occurs on a smaller scale to Roses, the rivalry between the two institutions always leads to exciting contests. After the long day of sport, both institutions gather at Toffs nightclub to celebrate or drown their sorrows. Usually we’re the ones celebrating!
The tournament is a great chance to prepare for the annual Roses competition, and offers a unique opportunity to get to know our counterparts from across the city.
