History
The University of York Athletic Union dates back to late October 1963, the founding year of the University. It was set up, aided by a pot of money provided by administration, to establish new clubs and societies. The first committee was made up of just six members, with 21 clubs mentioned in the first ever AU handbook. These included clubs which no longer exist in their original form - the Angling Club (which sourced the campus lake), Heslington Flying Club, and the Rifle Shooting Club. Now the committee is composed of 12 elected officers, one of which is paid, and they oversee 54 clubs.
