Charity of the Year
Each year the Athletic Union nominates a charity to support for the academic year. The money is generated through the charitable efforts of the clubs and individual members of the Athletic Union. Nearly every club organises at least one charity fundraising event during the year.
Last year the Athletic Union raised over £4,500 for NSPCC and Sport Relief, with events such as a dodgeball tournament, 24-hour matches, barbeques and a race night. This year the aim is to double that total!
Congratulations must go to the squash club, who alone raised over £1000 - organising events such as a 24-hour squash game, a quadracket tournament and charity punch.
This year's charity is the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Launched in October 2000, they have flown over 6,000 missions in seven years. They are on call 365 days a year, and need to raise £2.5million per year to continue running, which is a massive £6,900 per day. Let's do our best to raise as much money as possible for this very worthy cause.
Watch out for the AU Race Night later this term, our annual dodgeball tournament in spring. Details of all AU events will be posted on the homepage nearer the time.
If you have an idea for fundraising email au@yusu.org.
In an attempt to raise money, the Athletic Union is organising a sponsored bike ride to Lancaster in March. For more details, watch this space! Sign up to the mailing list at the stall at the AU Mart.
