Helping students to engage in volunteering whilst studying at York. Have a look at our projects, and if anything interests you get involved!
Babylon is a new volunteering project which sees students teaching French, German, and Spanish in primary schools across York as an after-school club. Our aims are to introduce foreign languages to British children at a younger age, to teach useful things that can be used on a day-to-day basis, and to promote teaching as a possible career path for language students. However, you don’t have to be fluent to teach—remember, most of the kids are aged between 3 and 11, and are still mastering English, let alone a foreign language! International students are more than welcome, as long as they can provide some sort of criminal check from their home country. Babylon only started in January 2009 but we are hoping to expand this coming year—we need you!
"What an excellent project! I would love my daughter (just entered reception) to have the opportunity to take an after-school language class. As a parent I wish you well in your project." — Heather Marsden, Department of Language and Linguistic Science, University of York.
"We are always looking at ways of providing young people in the city with new or extended opportunities, and this project is certainly proving popular! We are delighted to be working with the students from the University for mutual benefit." — Sarah Carrick, Project Officer at City of York Council.
"It’s very interesting and lots of fun at French Club, especially when we’re eating food!" &mndash; Amber-Rose Isherwood, Participant at Tang Hall Primary School.
